General Information

Temperature range and rainfall

A great temperature range predominates both during summer and winter.

Marked temperature swings are frequent during the day, and night temperatures are considerably different from daytime ones.

Summers are warm, with maximum temperatures reaching 38° C (wind chill temperature) in the sun, while minimum temperatures can decrease to 0° C in winter, or even reach below zero extremes on some occasions. Coldest months are May through October.

This is a windy area, all year round. Winds from north-west, west and south-east directions are very frequent, and "Zonda" wind is one of the fiercest.

Also characteristic of the area is the dry climate, except during the summer, when most rainfall occurs. Average annual precipitation for Talampaya ranges from 150 to 170 mms.

talampayaDawn and Dusk Tours

Many visitors wish to experience Talampaya Canyon at dawn or dusk. For them, we suggest the 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. tours.

Watching the sunset is an unforgettable moment, with the Canyon glowing in a beautiful red light. An image your eyes will always remember.

Plan your trip in advance

Talampaya Canyon receives around 60,000 visitors a year, mostly during the winter and increasingly during fall and spring.

As regards lodging in one of the nearby towns during the high season months, reservations are advised. For visitors who wish to spend the night and amaze at one of the clearest skies in Argentina, camping reservations are also an option.

Crowds thin from December to March, thus making this period the recommended time to visit the park and make the most out of the experience and the services.

Useful Tips

Wear proper shoes (sport or hiking boots), light clothes and sunscreen during your walks, and don’t forget to carry a bottle of water. In winter, wear a polar or duvet coat, and protect from the sun with a hat and sunglasses.

Protect the animals

Let’s keep them wild!

Do not feed the animals: when wild animals taste human-processed food, they become addicted. This can lead them to death.

Keep your distance: do not let the animals near you. This could be dangerous, even when many of them are familiarized with human presence.

Keep silent: silence increases the chances of seeing animals belonging to the different species that live in the park.

Camping in the Park

Camping in the Park is a unique experience; the stars and the moon seem to be within armreach! The camping ground has limited available sites. Facilities include toilets and showers. There is also a restaurant -Naturaleza Mistica- that stays open until 10:00 p.m.

Camping during spring, summer and fall is advised, though it is also possible to do it in winter.

Souvenir shop

It is very common for visitors to want a souvenir from Talampaya, and that is why Regionales Talampaya is in the park. The shop offers regional products, such as local jams, wines and preserves; and souvenirs, such as t-shirts, cups, park DVDs, local music CDs, books and others, at reasonable prices.

Where to stay

Nearest lodging is in Pagancillo, a small town only 30Kms away from the Canyon entrance. Also, the town of Villa Union, about 58Kms away, is an alternative with a greater variety of lodgings, restaurants and shops.
